Like any machine or tool, if you want it to function accurately, proper maintenance is essential. A gun is no different. In order to ensure that your gun will perform to the best of its abilities, you must be sure to keep it clean and keep its frictional parts lubricated. Whether you're a law enforcement officer and rely on your gun when on duty or if you're a civilian and rely on your gun for personal protection, when the moment comes that you need your firearm, you should never have to worry that it won't function properly. Failure and doubt is not an option in moments such as these, which is why it's important to care for your gun and keep it clean at all times.
Properly cleaning your gun requires a quality cleaning kit. You want to be able to get at hard to reach areas, such as the chamber and bore, and a quality cleaning kit will help accommodate those needs. When purchasing a cleaning kit, some things you'll want to look for in a kit include: long "Q-tip" style swabs, a cleaning rod, rod-ends, patches, pipe cleaners, a soft rag, bore solvent, gun oil and a brush of some type. You want to be sure your chamber, barrel and most importantly, your feed ramp, are clean. Often, feed ramps will be chromed to purposely be "slippery" to the nose of the round. You'll want to be sure that the feed ram is clean of carbon so you don't get a failure to feed, which is one of the most common types of misfires in pistols.
